Restaurant Kanalen on Christianshavn
Right by the canal in historic Christianshavn, you’ll find Restaurant Kanalen – a centrally located hidden gem where the pace slows down and the city feels a little further away.
From the tables, you can watch the boats drift by and the light move gently across the water. The canals set the rhythm here, and everything follows.
Guests come for lunch, dinner, or simply a glass of wine by the water. Some stay a little longer than planned.
It’s a place to settle in, take your time, and enjoy good food in calm, waterside surroundings.
Restaurant with a view
Restaurant Kanalen sits right on the edge of the quay, in a part of Christianshavn where history is still very much present with typical danish period architecture all around.
It’s a relaxed place to lunch and dine on Christianshavn, where a seasonal kitchen meets its surroundings effortlessly. Guests come from the neighbourhood and from across the city, drawn by seasonal gastronomy that is precise, simple, and grounded – served in a relaxed setting, for both lunch and dinner.
As the day moves on, the light reflects off the water and finds its way into the restaurant and onto the south-facing terrace. It gives the space a calm, shifting atmosphere that follows the rhythm of the canal outside.
A unpretentious cuisine guided by the danish seasons
At the helm of the kitchen is Peter Yung, winner of Danish Chef of the Year 2017. The cooking is centred around carefully selected seasonal ingredients, where flavour is allowed to take the lead. Here you’ll find dishes that honour danish traditions and also brings Mediterranean and Other international flavours into play.
The kitchen works with everything from seafood, grilled meats, along with a wide variety of vegetables. The menu offers a selection of smaller dishes and snacks designed for sharing around the table. Though it is also possible to simply choose your own courses and enjoy a more traditional meal.
Our approach is simple. Classical European cooking techniques – particularly French traditions – forms the foundation, while Peter Yung’s international experience adds a personal and contemporary touch. From Italy to Peru, and from London to China, he draws inspiration that is refined through a kitchen focused on quality ingredients.
Despite Restaurant Kanalen’s recommendation in the Michelin Guide, the atmosphere always remains relaxed and unpretentious.
